Based on a bestselling series of young adult books, The Cheetah Girls by Deborah Gregory.
The book series is about a girl singing group who seek to be discovered and become famous and land that ever-important recording contract. The film is about four teenage girls in New York seeking a record deal. They are discovered by a record producer while rehearsing for a school talent competition.
Due to the popularity of the film, Disney formed a singing group with three of the lead actresses -- all but Raven-Symoné -- also named "The Cheetah Girls".

- Perhaps the biggest change was cutting out the character Anginette, Aqua's twin sister and fifth member of the group.
- Dorinda is changed from bi-racial to caucasian.
- The Cheetah Girls all attend one school (In the books, Aqua and Angie attend a performing arts annex as opposed to fashion school.)
- Galleria is changed from tough, but ultimately warm-hearted to cynical and icy.
- Dorothea was originally intended to be a six-foot, plus-size, diva. In the movie she is short and waify.
- No reference was made to Chanel's eating disorder, which she suffered from in the books.
- Twinkie is changed from caucasian to African-American.
- Dorinda's last name is changed from Rogers to Thomas.

The Cheetah Girls is a television show picked up by ABC in 2003. After filming four episodes, the show was delayed because That's So Raven's contract was renewed; subsequently, Raven-Symoné was unavailable to film The Cheetah Girls. Now that That's So Raven has finished production, there has not been any news as to whether or not The Cheetah Girls will resume production. However, it is believed that this is not a possibility due to Raven's recent comments about "...not doing another sitcom for a while". Many rumors have circulated that Raven will be playing Galleria in season one (or half of it) and will then leave the show because Galleria and her family move to Spain to pursue her mother's fashion design career. Actor Steven A. Massey has also been mentioned as a cast member; however, this has not been confirmed.

- Dorinda's character is a foster child and Cheetah Girls creator, Deborah Gregory, was raised in the New York City foster care system.
- The Cheetah Girls was filmed in Toronto and New York City in October 2002.
- Toto, the Cheetah Girls mascot is actually Cappuccino, the real-life pooch of author and creator, Deborah Gregory.
- The Cheetah Girls DVD was the first by a DCOM to be certified Platinum for DVD sales of over 1 million. The highest selling DCOM DVD is High School Musical.
- In this movie, in every single one of their performances, none of them are seen wearing or holding any mics although their voices are amplified as if they singing into mics. In the second movie, Disney must've gotten the hint and they finally started to perform with mics.
- They couldn't find twins that represented Aqua and Angie for the movie.
- The group Sonic Chaos might be referring to Sonic and Chaos from Sonic Adventure*
- All four girls are from a different race, Galleria-biracial, Aqua-African American, Chanel-Latina, Dorinda-Caucasian.
- In one of the last scenes where Toto is stuck in the hole, and all Galleria's friends come, they're all wearing the same outfit but in different colours.

- In the scene where Chanel is putting on a mask, and her mother announces that Luc wants them to move to France, she still has the mask in her hand. When Chanel is called by Galleria, she is seen putting her hand in her hair with the mask nowhere in sight.
- Dorinda's name is Dorinda Rogers, but in the movie, Chanel asks for "Dorinda Thomas" (although it might have been an alias). It was most likely changed because Dorinda was originally bi-racial in the book but was completely Caucasian in the film.
- If you look closely in the closing scene, while the girls are dancing, Adrienne Bailon's sweatshirt goes from partially zipped, to completely unzipped, and it keeps switching.
