Talk:Juan Pablo Sorín
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Denoting Sorin's religion (or the religion of any other player) isn't a relevant aspect of his biography. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 149.79.54.70 (talk • contribs) 10:30, 6 June 2006.
- It is, and very much so. Please do not revert again. Sebastian Kessel Talk 21:22, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
- I disagree. Gabriel Batistuta's page does not describe him as a "Catholic-Argentine" football player. If it was listed later in the article it would be one thing, but footballers, or even athletes in general, are described by nationality rather than as "Jewish-Argentine" or "Catholic-French" or "Islamic-Iranian." The issue is handled much more successfully in the article about Sandy Koufax, the American baseball player. The fact that he is Jewish is noted. However, he is not identified as "Jewish-American." See also the article about American footballer Jeff Agoos. He is not listed as "Jewish-American," but the fact that he is Jewish is noted in the links. I am not saying that the fact that Sorin is Jewish is not significant or that it should not be noted at all in the stub or in the links. However, it is not general practice to identify famous athletes by their religion and nationality in hyphenated form. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.22.123.195 (talk • contribs).
- I have added a bio section. For now I removed the Jewish reference in the intro but left the category of Jewish Sportmen. We can still discuss this a little bit further if necessary. Gadig 04:16, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
I certainly do not object to the "Jewish Sportsmen" reference and I don't think it would be inappropriate to mention or note his religion in the biography section either if you wanted to add it. I just don't agree with the religious reference in the initial nationality description for the reasons previously stated. I definitely appreciate your willingness to discuss this. Thanks for the invitation to sign up for an account, I agree that is a good idea and I will try to do that tomorrow.

[edit] Ethnicity
Can we source Sorin's ethnicity? Also, to just add "Born to a Jewish family" before his soccer backround reads poorly, inho. If it can be source, can Sorin's ethnicity be incorporated into the article in a better way?? Thanks!
