Shirley Temple est une actrice et scénariste américaine née le 23 avril 1928 à Santa Monica, Californie (États-Unis).

Cette actrice de Santa Monica a joué dans plus de 40 films pendant les années 1930. On la remarque pour son talent dès l'âge de cinq ans: elle mémorisait parfaitement les pas de danse. Ses films sont encore très populaires aujourd'hui, particulièrement chez les jeunes filles.
Temple commença sa carrière à l'âge de trois ans, paraissant dans deux séries de productions à petit budget. Elle fut signée avec Fox à la fin de 1933 après sa parution dans Stand Up and Cheer avec James Dunn. Son contrat fut prolongé plusieurs fois de 1933 à 1935, et elle fut prêtée à Paramount en 1934 pour jouer dans une paire de films qui furent bien réussis. Pendant quatre ans, ses films étaient les plus regardés des États-Unis. Beaucoup de marchandises en lien avec Shirley Temple étaient produites pendant les années 1930. Elle fut la première récipiendaire de l'Oscar pour jeunes acteurs et ceci est noté dans le livre Guinness des records.
Le rôle de Dorothy dans Le Magicien d'Oz, joué par Judy Garland, lui était originellement destiné. Au début de sa vingtaine, elle mit fin à sa carrière au cinéma, ayant remporté un grand succès dans Depuis ton départ, Le Massacre de Fort Apache et Deux sœurs vivent en paix.
Elle s'est mariée à l'acteur John Agar en 1945. Elle a eu son premier enfant à l'âge de 17 ans, et le couple eut une fille appelée Linda en 1948. Ils divorcèrent en 1950 et plus tard elle se maria avec l'homme d'affaires Charlie Black et prit son nom. M. Black avoua qu'il n'avait jamais vu ses films, et cela a pu lui paraître rafraîchissant. Avec Black, elle a eu deux enfants : Lori et Charlie Black. Elle resta avec cet homme jusqu'à son décès du syndrome myélodysplasique le 4 août 2005
Après sa carrière dans le cinéma, Black s'est impliquée en politique, dans le Parti républicain. Temple fut ambassadrice au Ghana (1974-1976), puis en Tchécoslovaquie (1989-1992). Ayant vécu la révolution de velours, elle décrit cela comme «le meilleur travail que j'ai jamais eu». En 1976, elle est devenue la première femme à être chef de protocole du département d'État américain. Son autobiographie, intitulée Child Star: An Autobiography, a été publiée en 1988.
Elle habite maintenant à Woodside en Californie.
