Agit-Pop, derived from agitprop and is a portmanteau of agitation pop, is where popular music is used deliberately to express or disseminate political views or ideas.
A band of the same name from Upsate New York was formed in 1981 and released four records on the Comm3, Twintone [1] and Rough Trade labels. Members included Mark LaFalce, John deVries and Rick Crescini. The band was a pioneer in the underground music community and known for their unusual song styles, instrumentation and lyrical content in the rock genre.
The phrase Agitpop was coined by John Beekman, a musician and close friend of the band who also lived in Upsate New York.
