Tom Glavine excelled in several sports during his time at Billerica Memorial High School, including ice hockey and baseball, where he was a teammate of former all-star 游擊手 Gary DiSarcina. As a result, he was drafted by both the Los Angeles Kings in the 1984 NHL amateur draft (in the 4th round, 69th overall—five rounds ahead of future NHL star Luc Robitaille), and the Atlanta Braves Major League Baseball organization in the 2nd round of the 1984 amateur baseball draft. Tom elected to play baseball and made his Major League debut on 1987年8月17日。

For the first time since 1988年, Glavine failed to win 10 games, also posting his first losing record in that span, 9-14. In 2004年, he stumbled again with his 2nd straight losing record, going 11-14. Glavine's slump was partially blamed on the 紐約大都會 decline as a team since the 2002年 season, resulting in poor run support that frequently deprived him of an otherwise easy win. However, despite his lack of success with the 大都會, his pre-2003年 performance is more than enough to make him a virtual lock for the 棒球名人堂. This gives Glavine an entirely different look and feel，and has prompted the success starting in mid 2005 and into today。

Like longtime Atlanta teammate Maddux，葛拉文 has been one of the better-hitting pitchers of his generation. He is a career .188 hitter -- very good for a pitcher -- and has hit over .200 in eight seasons, with a career best of .289 in 1996年. He has a good eye, drawing a high number of walks, which combined with his hits have given him a career 上壘率 of .246. This was originally thought to be a symptom of Raynaud's syndrome, which Glavine was diagnosed with in 1990, but according to the pitcher, doctors "...picked something up when they did the ultrasound." The results of the test showed that the problem could be treated with medicine and Glavine resumed pitching on September 1, 2006 against the 休士頓太空人.
