Willie Fernie (footballer)

William "Willie" Fernie (born 22 November 1928, in Kinglassie, Fife) was a Scottish footballer who played for the Scotland national football team in both the 1954 and 1958 FIFA World Cups.
Fernie played for Celtic between 1950 and 1958 and was part of the 1953-54 Double team, as well as playing in the 7-1 League Cup final defeat of Rangers in 1957. He also played for Middlesbrough and St Mirren before moving into coaching.
Kilmarnock appointed Fernie their manager in 1973. He led the team to promotion back to Division One in 1973-74 and then, after league reconstruction, to promotion to the new Premier Division in 1975-76. However, as a part-time team, Killie struggled in the top flight and were unsurprisingly relegated in 1976-77. A bad start to the following season resulted in Fernie being sacked and resolving to leave the football industry. He has since worked as a taxi driver.
