[edit] Welcome to WikiProject: Brisbane!

(Viva Bris Vegas!)

Some Wikipedians have formed a project to create, fill out, build, edit, construct and modify articles about and related to Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland, Australia. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. To bring issues concerning Brisbane related articles to the attention of other Wikipedians involved in the Brisbane Project, please use the talk page. You can also propose new tasks for the to-do list located lower on this page.

The Australian Wikipedians' noticeboard is a useful forum for collaboration on Australian-related projects.

[edit] Scope

As Australia's third-largest city, and moreover, with a distinctive subtropical climate, landscape, architecture and atmosphere, there should be plenty of useful material on the River City for interested contributors, from both North and South of the Tweed, to add.

This WikiProject should ideally focus on Brisbane (ie. Greater Brisbane) proper; excluding the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, and other areas in SE Queensland.

[edit] Goals

  1. To gather and present all useful material about Brisbane in articles with a high standard and consistent with Wikipedia policy.
  2. To collaborate with interested participants in developing a format for the presentation of information about Brisbane, freely cribbing from other projects in order to get there :).

The building and site that the treasury casino now occupies has important significance to Brisbane’s history. The site that is now bordered by George, Queen, Elizabeth and William Street is a primal location in Brisbane city because of the relation to the river and to the Queen Street Mall. The treasury building began development in 1883 and was be completed in three stages. Final completion was not until 1928. The design was proposed by Australian Architect John James Clark. In that time the treasury building would be home to many government authorities such as the Registrar-General, Premier, Treasury, Security, Mines, and the Police. However, from 1989 the Registrar-General was the sole occupant of the building due to the development of other modern accommodation for other members of the government. The building is an important symbol of the development and progress of Brisbane’s political history. The architectural style can be compared to that of the 16th century Italian architecture. (EPA 2006) It has an accomplished design, detailing both exterior and interior, materials such as sandstone and boasts exquisite workmanship. Compared to modern buildings in the Brisbane CBD it is a jewel of history that should be appreciated. It is this transcendence that this building has with our past that adds to its significance to Brisbane now in 2006. The now Conrad Treasury Casino, is now a contrast of the once political orientated statue it is now a building full vibrance and entertainment. It is home to two bars, five restaurants, and eight function rooms. The treasury casino is also provides for the Brisbane community by hosting of the annual groove and grape festival plus the entertainment they provide every night of the week. This includes comedy shows, bands, musicians and dancing shows. (Conrad webpage) In addition, it also adds to the conjuring a sense of place.

“Place-making derives from meaning from qualities of a location and its surroundings as it envisions capitalizing upon potential of their attributes.” (Menin 2003, 144)

“When building and site successfully fuse together.” (Menin 2003, 144)

“Successful architecture consequently necessitates places that mutually reinforce one’s life experiences where happenings and settings interact as a totality. (Menin 2003, 144)

“The cultural framework defines the relationship between people and place with a clarity that transcends geography.” (Barnes 1995, 14)
