Torreón is a city in the Mexican state of Coahuila. In 2003 it had an estimated population of 578,000 people, reaching 1,110,000 in the Metropolitan Area, including Matamoros in the state of Coahuila, Gómez Palacio, and Lerdo in the state of Durango. It is considered the 9th biggest Metro area in the country and the biggest in their confluent states Coahuila and Durango. Torreon is served by Francisco Sarabia International Airport.

[edit] Geography
Torreón is located at (Laguna region of the state. The border is marked by the Río Nazas river and is also the divider between the city of Gómez Palacio in Durango and Torreón. Despite its promising name of Laguna (Lagoon), the region has a quite arid climate, with plants generally found in deserts and the animals commonly found in these habitats. The cities of Torreón, Gomez Palacio and Lerdo make up the Comarca Lagunera, which is a basin within the Chihuahuan Desert that has a high economic activity. The city also is 35 miles south from historic san pedro de las colonias where some of the Mexican Revolution took place. Today it has some of the most prestigious universities on the north region of México and currently it has the most diverse ethic groups with immigrants from Europe and Middle East.

Torreón has a soccer team in the Primera División de México, Santos Laguna. It also has a baseball team called Los Vaqueros and a basketball team called Los Algodoneros de la Comarca.

The must visit "Cristo de las Noas" is the 2nd biggest Christ Sanctuary in Latin America, is the image of Jesus with extended arms, symbolising protection for the inhabitants of Torreon, it is situated on the top of a hill. In this hill named "Las Noas" has a Catholic church over the top and where you can see the entire city in eagle view.
