[edit] Synopsis
Phoebe sees the ghost of a serial killer while on a sightseeing visit to Alcatraz. Phoebe watches in horror as the evil spirit escapes the island seeking revenge on the people responsible for sending him to the gas chamber. Phoebe and Prue must figure out how to vanquish the evil spirit and stop him from killing again, and they must do it without Piper, who is off on a business trip.

- Jackson Ward: During his life in 1940's San Francisco, Jackson Ward had been a serial murderer. He was caught and condemned to death by execution on the prison island of Alcatraz. After his death, he became an evil spirit, waiting until he can get revenge on those who executed him. No mortal can see him or hear him, but he can lift objects and walk through walls. He can leave an ectoplasmic finger print. He kills his victims with a knife-like object in a circle. In order to banish Jackson, or any evil spirit, one must travel to the astral plane and recite a vanquishing spell.
- The Soul Collector: A beautiful yet evil demon, the soul collector seeks the souls of witches, and empower mortal ghosts with special abilities to help her gain those souls. Phoebe and Prue outsmart the collector's ghostly plan, a former convict from Alcatraz, but the collector threatens to return someday.
- Inspector Rodriguez: Rodriguez was actually a a demon with the power to throw energy balls, posing as an Inspector from Internal Affairs. He had been sent to destroy the Charmed Ones. He was aided by the Tempus, who made a time loop, which repeated the same day over and over until Rodriguez could succeed in killing the sisters.

- To Lure an Evil Spirit: Mix equal parts of mercury and acid with the blood of one of the spirit's victims, pour it over his/her grave. Leaving an epistle of your name and a counterfeit of your face, he will seek thee out forthwith.
- To Vanquish a Spirit: Another spirit or a person's astral self must recite these words in the presence of the unwanted spirit: Ashes to ashes, spirit to spirit. Take his soul, banish this evil.

- At one point in the episode, Phoebe says the line, "Where's Buffy when you need her?" when they are hunting for a ghost. This is a reference to the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which was another hit series on The WB. The central character in that series is "The Chosen One" to hunt vampires and other forces of darkness.
- Phoebe speaks "Ubbi dubbi" in this episode, which is commonly used on the kids show, ZOOM.
- In this episode, the ghost was supposed to have been executed at Alcatraz and trapped there after his death. No prisoners were ever executed at Alcatraz.
- The vanquishing spell used in this episode is later used by Piper in the episode Saving Private Leo.
- This is one of many episodes in which one of the Charmed Ones dies, only to be revived at the end of the episode.
- This is the first time Prue died, other than the two non-real Prues in Which Prue Is It, Anyway?
