Removed the following from the article because it doesn't fit, IMHO.
Some famous starfighter pilots of the Star wars Universe include:
It seems a bit odd to note only the SW fighter pilots. If we are, then we should put them in a seperate article and note other famous starfighter pilots as well (Starbuck and Apollo from BSG, Rick Hunter and Roy Fokker from Robotech, Buck Rogers from the 70s version of the franchise, etc. etc. etc.). I'm amending this section with a few lines about "Snubfighters" in Star Wars:
"Starfighter" is a science fiction term used to describe relatively small, maneuverable manned spacecraft designed for military combat (cf starship). Strictly speaking, the term "starfighter" only applies to those that can independently perform intersystem travel; "spacefighter" would be a more appropriate title for those that cannot.
Adding: In the Star Wars Universe, a Starfighter is a blanket term for all small combat space craft, regardless of Shields, Hyperspace capability, Weaponry (Unless it carries none), Armour, Maneuverability and Crew. "Snubfighter", though no concise definition has been given, refers to a fighter carrying Shielding, secondary weapons systems such as Proton Torpedoes or Concussion Missiles, and being hyperspace capable.

Spacefighters, by implication, do not have the drives neccessary for superluminal motion and therefore must confine their operation to one solar system, unless there was some FTL carrier ship to take it. It cannot independently travel between stars, so it's only a spacefighter. It just has to be within space. A rudimentary spacefighter might be within our current technology, though barely, we'd never do it anytime soon, though. (If we were really that grimy we'd probably just nuke everyone — we're all on the same planet).
Starfighters, however have some kind of 'magic drive' and are capable of interstellar travel. They are able to fight between stars. We currently have no idea how to make a starfighter, it's against the current laws of physics.
This is somewhat semantic, each sci-fi universe uses whatever terms it sees fit.
