[edit] Welcome!

Welcome!

Hello Squiddy, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome!  --HappyCamper 03:36, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Venn Diagrams

Hmm, your browser did replace the Chinese and Japanese characters with question marks, but I don't know why your browser would be doing that (if you use IE, you might want to download the language packs at Windows Update). You might want to try posting something to the Help Desk. Feel free to keep editing the page, though you might want to use section editing to avoid that question-mark problem. It's really no big deal. :) --AySz88^-^ 15:00, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Nuggeting

You stated that this article was "nonsense". Please re-visit both the article and the discussion. Please also visit Talk:NUGGET#Cleanup and consider adding the article to your watchlist and assisting in the effort to keep the article clear of unverifiable additions and original research by schoolchildren. [edit] Featured article for December 25th

I noticed that you have listed yourself as an atheist Wikipedian. You will probably be interested to know that Brian0918 has nominated Omnipotence paradox as the front page article for December 25th. You can vote on this matter here. The other suggestion being supported by others for that date is Christmas, although Raul654 has historically been against featuring articles on the same day as their anniversary/holiday. [edit] Articles For Deletion

Hi, one or both of the following situations applies to you, and you may therefore be interested in related discussions.

You may also be interested in a discussion of whether or not the entire text of a whole bible chapter should be contained in the 6 articles concerning those specific chapters, and whether or not they should only use the translations favoured by fundamentalists. This is being discussed at Wikipedia:Centralized discussion/Whole bible chapter text.

[edit] Alan Chartock

If I provide the full URL, would that be ok? Zach 13:38, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

Hello, Zach. The problem is that the text which was taken from the other site is automatically copyright of the site owner/writer unless it has been put in the public domain. (See Wikipedia:Copyright problems for Wiki policy and stuff about copyright.)
If you re-wrote the article using the data from the website, but using your own words, that would not have a copyright problem. There is a red link to do this at a temporary page on the copyvio banner on Alan Chartock. Hope this helps. --Squiddy | (squirt ink?) 14:34, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

Today May 7, I posted a new Alan S. Chartock article doing the rewrite necessary to satisfy perceived copyright issues. You might want to check it out to see whether you find any other technical or legalistic problems with the article. Regards, Fungible 01:52, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Linking to categories

I saw your edit summary saying that you could not link to a category. To do this, insert a colon at the start of the link like this: [[:Category:The category]]. This will insert it as a link instead of including the article in the category. --GraemeL (talk) 14:50, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks very much. --Squiddy | (squirt ink?) 15:17, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] New page patrol

Hey, try to go easy on the {{nn-bio}} tags. Derek McCormack was identified as a university Vice-chancellor in his stub. Keep up the good work otherwise! Cheers, TenOfAllTrades(talk) 00:35, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Eric Shepherd

I removed your speedy deletion tag from this article. It seems to me as the publisher of the only magazine for Apple II-related topics, that constitutes a claim of notability. I sent it to WP:AFD instead (see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Eric Shepherd). Regards, howcheng {chat} 18:40, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WP:RFA/Quarl

Hi Squiddy, thanks for your support in my RFA, which succeeded. If I can ever improve or help in any way, please let me know! :) Quarl (talk) 2006-02-16 12:25Z

[edit] Katelyn Faber

Could you weigh in at the bottom of the Talk Page for Katelyn Faber regarding the inclusion of an image of her? User:Tufflaw, who unsuccessfully tried to have the entire article deleted back in December 2005 insists on censoring/deleting it for extremely specious reasons, and I've been asked to gather a consensus. Please read the bottom two sections of that page. Thanks. Nightscream 19:00, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] hi :)

Hey,how are you?, would you like to discuss my 'a priori' question here?. --Cosmic girl 23:24, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Hello, I'm fine, hope you are too. I'm happy to discuss it, although I am not an expert in philosophy. Bearing that in mind, here is my understanding of the issue:
A lot of a priori knowledge comes from the way we define words, so we know, a priori, that a circle has no corners because nothing with corners can be a circle. The philosophical interest is in whether we can know useful things that way. David Hume's attack on cause and effect and inductive logic 'woke Immanuel Kant from his slumber', and caused(!) him to write the famous Critique of Pure Reason. In this (difficult) book, Kant tries to find what he calls synthetic a priori knoweledge, ie knowledge which is not analytically true (ie it is not conceptually impossible for matters to be otherwise), but which is a priori. He does this to try to open a gap in Hume's argument, through which such useful stuff as cause-and-effect can be justified.
From your comment on the ref desk where you say you "'doubt' 'truth' itself... it can never prove itself from within", you might be coming close to a Nihilistic position. In that way you are quite close to Nietzsche, although he opposed Nihilism, he (in my opinion) did not manage to overcome it - his final project to overcome nihilism, the 'revaluation of all values', was incomplete at the time of his mental breakdown.
The above is not at all comprehensive, so look on it as a bunch of keywords for you to explore the issue yourself. Feel free to ask more Q's here if you want to.
All the best and happy philosophising, --Squiddy | (squirt ink?) 09:41, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Awesome.. yeah, I'm happy when I philosophise! :p lol. thank you for your answer...I suspected what you said already but you helped me through some doubts. you are cool...I like your username, why do you like squids? :| lol. --Cosmic girl 19:43, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Vandalism on Friedrich Nietzsche

I think it is best for you to be aware of the recent subjection of vandalism to the article, and I have so far traced these from the past to moments ago, all following similar patterns: [1]; similar vandalism, different IP, "honest" political distortions, and again. At any rate, I hope we can find some way to bring a stop to this ridiculousness bent on falsifying Nietzsche's claims and so on. I will try to notify others who have been keen on the article's improvement in the past.ignisscripta 00:06, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Petrejo's changes: To say the least, I'm extremely glad to see someone who I can count on regarding the constitution of this article. Excellent work; you have my thanks.ignisscripta 22:31, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

I can't eat 'em after I saw a documentary that talked about how much brain power is required to mimic shapes and colors like they do. Plus, in labs they play games and escape from their cages. Too smart to eat in my book. youngamerican (talk) 20:35, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Help moving my article

Hi Squiddy, thanks for the welcome! I recently started an article RUCC, and realised I should have created it as Reading University Canoe Club. I think I've requested it to be moved, but I'm not sure if it is correct. Rew 13:06, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

Great - Thanks! Rew 14:05, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Friedrich Nietzsche

Hi Squiddy, I was very tempted to revert those FN edits myself, but I really don't want to start a revert war. I left a note for "non-vandal" to come and discuss his/her objection on the FN discussion page. I'll start the ball rolling there myself in the hope of heading off an revert war. Cheers, mgekelly 08:22, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Dude, you've violated 3RR on FN. I am on your side, but I feel like I should point it out. mgekelly 17:51, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
I reverted exactly three times yesterday, and the rule forbids reverting *more than* three times. I am aware of this rule and will make sure not to break it. Cheers, --Squiddy | (squirt ink?) 10:44, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
I'm glad to see how you replied to Petrejo today, but it ultimately amounts to nothing as Petrejo's post very clearly shows. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't deserve a response and I have nothing to say to it. — ignis scripta 22:50, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Reminder

When using template tags on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:test}} instead of {{test}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template.
Ian Manka Talk to me‼ 02:53, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
The message, was actually, in fact, for a {{test}} message you left on another user's talk page. As for why you need to subst:, here's what I posted on User talk:SmithManly -- hope it makes sense:
In a nutshell, as the above box describes, subst:-ing serves two purposes:
  1. Reduces server load. If you leave a template lying around on a talk page, every time the talk page is loaded, the template will have to be accessed from the main server, slowing down both the server and you, as the page has to go and "get" the template from the server.
  2. Accidental blanking of the template. When the server looks up a template (say {{test}}), it will go to that template page, and write to the talk page what the template says. If the template is vandalised or blanked, any time between when the vandalism occurs and when the vandalism is reverted, the user will see, in an un-subst:ed version, the vandalised template. So, instead of seeing:
Thank you for experimenting with Wikipedia. Your test worked, and has been reverted or removed. Please use the sandbox for any other tests you want to do. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia. ,
a user may see:
Hey, cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111 Look at me! I'm on Wikipedia (an example of vandalism)
or

This is why it is important to subst: templates. If you have any further questions, please see my talk page. Happy editing! — Ian Manka Talk to me‼ 03:25, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pope Pius XII

Thanks for your comments. Sorry you got harrassed so much and I hope that it doesn't prevent you from commenting further on this article. It's ironic that only two users have responded to the request for comment so far, both of them in support of the inclusion of the image, and yet the section is already full of incomprehensible ranting from the "regulars". savidan(talk) (e@) 17:26, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your friendly comment. I probably will turn up on the Pius XII page again, because I think the Holocaust section is one-sided, but I am not going to be editing much for a while due to real life. Cheers, --Squiddy | (squirt ink?) 09:29, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Eriboll

Just thanks for the backup on the link removal - he was bugging me and I was not sure what to do next - thanks --Herby talk to me 12:10, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Hum - so I looked at the edit again and found you didn't take it out - my mistake and I'll go look at some policies before I take it out again. --Herby talk to me 16:03, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
I'm pretty neutral as to that link; on the plus side, there are no other links, it is at least a picture of the loch, and there are plenty of links to pdfs etc. elsewhere on WP, but on the minus side it's a fairly crappy picture/app, and some people won't be able to see it. I really only commented because I didn't want to see an edit war start on such a low-traffic page when everyone's energy could be better directed. --Squiddy | (squirt ink?) 19:16, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
OK that makes sense and thanks for the response. I guess the fact they keep putting it back suggests to me that they are more interested in their website than Wiki but I will go away and do constructive things while I think about it! --Herby talk to me 07:20, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Communist state

As you are a rare Wikipedia editor who what the subject of communist state refers to, I could use your help in responding to pontential questions about my recent rewrite of the aritcle. Thanks. 172 | Talk 21:48, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Apology

So this is in fact a sincere apology for walking you down the primrose path of mutual understanding only to stick you between the ribs. Yes, I can be a real bastard sometimes. It's a question of deriving satisfation from power; however in this case it was passive-aggressive, which obviously is quite negative. Proskauer 01:40, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Lenin's Tomb

Having some problems on the Lenin's Tomb (blog) page with repeated vandalism from user:Meaders-who has now started throwing around 3 revert rule tags etc. If you had another look in, it would be appreciated.Felix-felix 16:41, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Please stop vandalising factual edits to Lenin's Tomb (blog)

My username is irrelevant. Any non-current edits that you refer to are irrelevant. The fact that I have edited this, or any other, or no other, wiki is irrelevant. What is relevant is that my edits, which simply point out factual content and are descriptive only are being removed by you because you don't want those facts stated in public. This is against the spirit of Wikipedia.

The comments may be full of trolls and nutcases but none of the commenters who regularly praise and celebrate the deaths of American soldiers are ever decried as such on the blog - for example search for comments by Lenin's tomb Rosa Lichtenstein's and also comments, or recent comments by Unclejimbo http://www.haloscan.com/comments/lenin/116578903863177599/#365688. These are the facts - whether you like them or not is irrelevant. Clearly you don't like any light shone upon them, but that is not the point.
