Socket 754 is a CPU socket originally developed by AMD to succeed its powerful Athlon XP platform (Socket 462, also referred to as Socket A). Socket 754 was the first socket developed by AMD to support their new consumer version of the 64 bit microprocessor family known as AMD64.

[edit] Comparison to other sockets

Socket 754 was the original socket for AMD's Athlon 64 desktop processors. Due to the recent introduction of newer socket layouts i.e. Socket 939 and AM2, Socket 754 has become the more "budget-minded" socket for use with AMD Athlon 64 or Sempron processors. In comparison, it differs from Socket 939 in several areas:

  • support for a single channel memory controller (64-bits wide) with maximum of 3 DIMMs (no dual channel support)
  • lower HyperTransport speed (800 MHz Bi-Directional, 16 bit data path, up and downstream)
  • lower effective data bandwidth (9.6 GB/s)
  • lower motherboard manufacturing costs

Although AMD has promoted Socket 754 as a budget platform on the desktop and encouraged mid and high end users to use Socket 939 (and recently Socket AM2) instead, Socket 754 remained for some time as AMD's high end solution for mobile applications i.e. no Socket 939 Athlon 64 CPUs has ever been marketed as a mobile processor.

The first processors using Socket 754 came on the market in Fall of 2003. Socket 754 is due to be gradually phased out in favor of Socket AM2, which was released on May 23, 2006.

A chipset usually comprises two chips, a south side bridge and a north side bridge. The computer's peripheral controllers such as the drive controllers and sound devices are connected to the south bridge. Very fast devices such as AGP slots and PCI express slots are connected to the north bridge. The north and south bridges are connected, as are the CPU and the north bridge. The CPU and north bridge connection is usually referred to as the front side bus(FSB.)

Because AMD 64 CPUs have an onboard memory controller, the memory is connected to the CPU directly. In socket 754 chipsets, the connection between the CPU and the north bridge uses a method called HyperTransport. This bus is a 16 bit (two byte) DDR (double data rate bus). An 800 MHz HyperTransport bus has a bandwidth of 1.6 GB/s. This may be referred to as a front side bus, but it's not a traditional front side bus which normally handles data transfers from memory as well as peripherals. The nForce 3 and nForce 4 south bridges are integrated into the north bridge chip, as a result of being smaller due to the lack of a memory controller.
