Slatina is the capital city of Olt county, Romania, on the river Olt.

The town of Slatina is mentioned for the first time in an official document issued by Vladislav I Vlaicu on January 20th, 1386. The document states that merchants from Braşov should not pay a fee at the Slatina customs point.The name's origin is Slavic "Slam-tina", which means "salted land" or "salty water", although a small minority promote a politicized misconception that the term originates in the Latin "Salatina".

In this city is located one of the biggest factories producing Aluminium in southeastern Europe ("ALRO").

The local football team Alro Slatina is playing in Liga 3,the third league of Romania. There is also the women's handball team LPS Slatina,which plays in the second hanball league of Romania.

Several important persons were born in this city, among them being the playwright Eugen Ionescu and the Symbolist poet Ion Minulescu.
