IMDb profile |
Salvador is a 1986 film which tells the story of an American journalist in El Salvador covering the story of the assassination of Archbishop Óscar Romero. While trying to get his Salvadoran girlfriend out of the country, he becomes entangled with both leftist guerrillas and rightist military. It stars James Woods, James Belushi, Michael Murphy, John Savage, Elpidia Carrillo, Tony Plana, Cynthia Gibb, Juan Fernandez and José Carlos Ruiz. The movie, despite its serious subject matter, is presented as a political thriller through the eyes of Boyle.
The movie was written by Oliver Stone and Richard Boyle, and was directed by Oliver Stone.
Though relatively unsuccessful at the box office (despite making its budget back), it was popularized on the Los Angeles-area cable station Z Channel, which showed it repeatedly shortly after it came out.
It was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role (James Woods) and Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen.
Many critics believe this to be among Stone's best films, and in recent years it has had a comeback in terms of critical acclaim.
