Oxford Township, Erie County, Ohio

Oxford Township is located in the southwestern portion of Erie County in north central Ohio. As of 2004, the population estimate for the township was 1,104 people. The official 2000 census recorded the population as 1,096. It is part of the Sandusky, Ohio metropolitan statistical area. Out of Erie County's ten townships, Oxford has the least amount of residents. Oxford Township is in an area referred to as the Firelands, part of the historic Connecticut Western Reserve.

Another way to describe Oxford Township's location is: east of State Route 4, west of US Route 250, north of the Huron County line, and south of NASA Plum Brook Station.

Oxford Township lies within two river watersheds, both flowing into Lake Erie. The Sandusky River (Sandusky Bay) watershed includes the northwest section of the township; Huron River watershed includes the southern and eastern sections of the township.

The majority of the topography of the township includes extremely flat to slightly rolling land; farm fields and small woodlots are in abundance. In the far southeast portion of the township, however, the topography becomes rugged with steep cliffs and dense woods near the West Branch of the Huron River. Some of the cliffs are over 100 feet high. There are even a couple of small waterfalls near Peru Center Road and Schaffer Road that are approximately 75 feet high!

Oxford Township boasts two state natural areas. Erie Sand Barrens State Nature Preserve is located in northwest Oxford Township on Scheid Road, while the Milan State Wildlife Area is located in southeast Oxford Township on Lover's Lane Road.

Oxford Township is, in a regional sense, a melting pot.

There are three named places in Oxford Township, none of which are incorporated. These include Bloomingville (intersection of Mason Road and Patten Tract Road); Kimball (bend of Delamatre Road); and North Monroeville (intersection of State Route 113, State Route 99, and Patten Tract Road).
The northern sections of the township use zip code 44870 (Sandusky); the southwestern sections use 44847 (Monroeville); the eastern sections use 44846 (Milan), and the extreme southeastern sections use 44857 (Norwalk).

Different sections of Oxford Township use different telephone prefixes, but all sections of the township use the same area codes (419, with 567 overlay). The different exchanges include Bellevue (483, 484); Bloomingville (359); Milan (499); Monroeville (465); Norwalk (660, 663, 668, 744); and Sandusky (609, 621, 624, 625, 626, 627). It should be noted that all of these land line prefixes use area code 419, as no area code 567 land line numbers have been assigned yet.

There are three school districts that cover Oxford Township. Berlin-Milan Local School District covers eastern sections of the township; Monroeville Local School District covers the southern sections of the township; and Perkins Local School District covers the northwestern sections of the township. Furthermore, parochial schools in Monroeville, Norwalk, and Sandusky are nearby.

For emergency services, the township is covered by the Erie County Sheriff's Department, North Central EMS, and the Groton Township Volunteer Fire Department (for residents of the western half) or the Milan Township Volunteer Fire Department (for residents of the eastern half).

All residents of the township vote in the same location, the Oxford Township Hall. The township hall, garage, and community park are located at 11104 Ransom Road, Monroeville, Ohio 44847.

All of Oxford Township is located within the Ohio 9th District of the US House of Representatives. Marcy Kaptur (D-Toledo) is the elected official for this district, which spans the Lake Erie shoreline from Toledo to the western suburbs of Cleveland.

All of Oxford Township is located within the Ohio State 2nd Senate District. Randy Gardner (R-Bowling Green) is the elected official for this district.

All of Oxford Township is located within the Ohio State 80th House District. Chris Redfern (D-Catawba Island) is the elected official for this district (and also serves as Chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party).
