Hm, kronlogien for Comyn er har forvirrete kilder. Både skotter og engelskmenn synes ikke å ha klarhet i å skille mellom far og sønn Comyn. Her er en slektsliste jeg fant:

The John Comyn who married Joan de Valence was the same Comyn who was murdered by Bruce in 1306. His son and heir John Comyn married Margaret Wake, and fought (and was slain) on the side of the English at Bannockburn in 1314.

The Red Comyn #1 Lord of Badenock Child of John Comyn and Alicia is: 2 i. John Comyn, died Abt. 1303; married Alianora de Bailiol.

4. John Comyn, born Bef. 1242; died Aft. 1273. He was the son of 8. Richard Comyn. He married 5. Alicia.

Comyn family tree in the Edinburgh History of Scotland Vol 1 by Professor A.A.M Duncan, I have came up with the following:

William Comyn's first wife died (name unknown) and he married Marjory, daughter to the Earl of Buchan. The children of the second marriage were styled Black Comyns. Alexander became Earl of Buchan as did his son John.

The children of the first marriage were styled the Red Comyns. The children were Richard, Joan (who married William the Earl of Ross) and Walter Lord of Badenoch and by marriage Earl of Menteith. Walter left no heirs so the Lordship of Badenoch was passed onto his nephew John (son of Richard) who became second Lord of Badenoch.

It is this first John who is seemingly personally styled the Red Comyn. One of his sons is also called John and he was styled the Black Comyn to differentiate him from his father (confusing us all as he is of the Red Comyn branch). This Black Comyn (of the Red Comyns) became Guardian of Scotland. It was his son John, who was like his grand-father styled the Red Comyn, who was stabbed by Bruce.

Vol IV of SP, pedigree of the 'Ancient Lords of Galloway', pp. 142-143: starting p. 142, listing of children of Alan of Galloway (d.1234) by his assorted wives: 5. Devorgilla, married in 1233 to John de Baliol of Barnard Castle. She is famed for her munificence in endowing Balliol College, Oxford, and building a bridge over the Nith at Dumfries. She founded, on 10 April 1273, the Abbey called Sweetheart or New Abbey in Galloway, and established other religious institutions. She died 28 January 1289-90, and was buried in her New Abbey with the heart of her husband, who had deceased in 1269. They had issue: -

(1) Sir Hugh, who was heir of his father. He died shortly before 10 April 1271, having married Agnes de Valencia, a niece of King Henry III., without issue. He is named in his mother's charter, above cited, to Sweetheart Abbey.

(2) Alan, who is named only in the claim made by John Baliol as competitor for the Crown of Scotland, and no other reference to him has been found. He is said to have succeeded Hugh, and to have died without issue.

(3) Sir Alexander, who succeeded to his brother Alan, and is styled Lord of Baliol. He died shortly before 13 November 1278, having married Alianora de Geneva, a kinswoman of King Henry III, who survived him, without issue.

(4) JOHN of whom hereafter.

(5) Cecilia, a daughter named by her mother Devorgilla in the foundation charter (1273) of Sweetheart Abbey, and was then deceased.

(6) Ada, married, at Whitsunday 1266, to William Lindsay, son of Walter Lindsay of Lamberton. (see under title CRAWFORD.)

(7) Alianora, married, between 1279 and 1283, to John Comyn of Badenoch. (see that article, vol. i. p. 508.)
