Goodnestone
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There are two villages in Kent called Goodnestone. The smaller one is near Faversham, just north of the Thanet Way (A299). The larger village is some twelve miles away, approximately 2 miles south of the A257 road, midway between Canterbury and Sandwich.[1]

[edit] Goodnestone near Faversham
This village was referred to in 1242 as "Godwineston", meaning "the farm or settlement of Godwin".[2] It has an unspoilt Norman church, built around 1100. The church has not been used for regular worship since 1982, but in 1996 it was vested in the Churches Conservation Trust. It was extensively repaired in 1997, and in 2006 it was understood[2] to be still consecrated.
[edit] Goodnestone Park near Sandwich
Goodnestone Park is a stately home near the Canterbury–Sandwich village. It was built in 1704 by Brook Bridges. Bridges' daughter, Elizabeth, married Jane Austen's brother, and Austen visited them on the estate regularly.[3] Its gardens are open to the public from late March to early October, and on Sundays from mid-February.
The ghost story writer M. R. James was born in Goodnestone Parsonage in 1862. His father, Herbert James, was curate at Goodnestone church.
[edit] Other
Goodnestone (1972) was the title of the first volume of poems published by Andrew Motion, who became Poet Laureate in 1998. It comprises a series of eighteen untitled poems.
