James Edward Alexander

Sir James Edward Alexander of Westerton (* 16. Oktober 1803 in Clackmannanshire; † 2. April 1885 auf der Isle of Wight) war britischer Offizier und Reiseschriftsteller.
Er erhielt seine Bildung zu Edinburgh, Glasgow und Sandhurst, diente dann bei der britischen Kavallerie in Indien und machte 1825 den Krieg in Birma mit. Später in Kapstadt als Adjutant des britischen Gouverneurs Benjamin D'Urban stationiert, unternahm er von hier aus eine Reise in die Länder nördlich vom Oranjefluß und drang bis in das Land der Dama vor. Nach seiner Rückkunft wurde er durch die Ritterwürde belohnt und bald darauf mit einer neuen Entdeckungsreise in den Wäldern von Britisch-Nordamerika beauftragt. Im Jahr 1854 nahm er am Krimkrieg teil und beteiligte sich schließlich am Kriege gegen die Maori auf Neuseeland.
1882 zum General ernannt, starb er im April 1885. Die südafrikanische Stadt Alexander Bay am Oranjefluß wurde nach ihn benannt.
