Differential media

Differential media are media through which biochemical characteristics of a bacteria may be identified by using nutrients and indicators (such as neutral red, phenol red, eosin y, and methyline blue) that will visibly indicate whether the characteristics we are looking for are present or not in our bacterial sample.
Some examples of differential medias are:
Eosin Methyline Blue (EMB): differential for lactose and sucrose fermentation.
MacConkey (MCK): differential for lactose fermentation
Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA): differential for mannitol fermentation.
Starch: differential for starch hydrolysis.
