The Croton Expressway is a 9.2 mile freeway located within Westchester County, New York. The expressway is signed as "US Route 9" and is not referred to as the Croton Expressway, but rather "Route 9". One mile from the freeway's northern terminus, US Routes 202 and 6 join the freeway to form a three-way multiplex. NY Route 35 ends where 202 and 6 join. The four-lane divided highway's northern terminus is at a stoplight at a three-way intersection with the Bear Mountain State Parkway. Drivers on US 6, 9, and 202 must make a left-hand turn for thru traffic or go straight onto the Bear Mountain. Those headed West on 6 and 202 and north on 9 will encounter a roundabout 550 feet later. Route 9 will head north and 6/202 will remain multiplexed toward the Bear Mountain Bridge. The southern terminus is at a stoplight intersection with Mystic Drive. As opposed to the Briarcliff-Peekskill Parkway Extension, the Croton Expressway was originally supposed to be Interstate 487, allowing a commercial-vehicle-accessible means of travel on the east side of the Hudson River. The 47-mile "Hudson River Expressway" would run from the Henry Hudson Parkway in the Bronx to Beacon, NY. The Croton was the only section of this highway built. NY Route 9A forms a short (1500 feet) multiplex with US-9 from the Croton Point Avenue exit to the Briarcliff-Peekskill Parkway/9A exit, just before the Croton Expressway ends. The freeway follows the State Speed Limit (55 MPH) for most of the route. North of Hudson Street, the freeway narrows noticeably, causing the speed limit to drop to 45 MPH.
