Butner is a census-designated place (CDP) in Granville County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,792 at the 2000 census.

Butner is located at 36°8′18″N, 78°45′32″W (36.138298, -78.758828)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 17.2 km² (6.6 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 5,792 people, 1,438 households, and 1,009 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 337.3/km² (873.4/mi²). There were 1,489 housing units at an average density of 86.7/km² (224.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 48.58% White, 45.27% African American, 0.69% Native American, 0.64% Asian, 3.35% from other races, and 1.47% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.56% of the population.

There were 1,438 households out of which 35.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.1% were married couples living together, 21.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.8% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 18.8% under the age of 18, 19.7% from 18 to 24, 31.1% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 138.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 144.9 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $40,341, and the median income for a family was $46,348. Males had a median income of $32,974 versus $23,565 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $15,174. About 2.0% of families and 5.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.3% of those under age 18 and 5.6% of those age 65 or over.
